Tabloid size (39 x 28,5 cm). In Arabic and some advertisements in Portuguese. [8] p., b/w ills. Slight wear to the spine, some spotting, splits, and chippings to centrefold but without loss. Otherwise, a good/very good copy.

Exceedingly rare one issue of Syrian Lebanese periodical, published between 1906-1941 in Sao Paolo, Brazil by Chucri Curi with the collaboration of an Armenian intellectual and early immigrant from Turkey to Brazil, Etienne Brasil (1882-1955).

There were around 120,000 Syrians in Brazil, including one good half linked to Lebanon who had never forgotten the French traditions of their country. Before the Great War, all Syrians indiscriminately were treated as Turks. However, a part of the colony retained its attachment to France. Brazilians are not accustomed to immigrants from the Orient and found it strange that the Syrians called themselves French. In their private schools, the Syrians lovingly taught the French language. In Sâo Paulo, Chucri Curi energetically attacked the tyrants of his homeland in his newspaper “O Sphynge”. Years later, Curi’s name was given to a street in Sao Paulo.
