The first studies and translations regarding slavery and abolition were made in the early years of the young Turkish Republic, which had refused the legacy of its imperial predecessor. In this period, several classics of American anti-slavery literature and the present work were translated for the first time.

Booker Taliaferro Washington was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to multiple presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader of the African American community and the contemporary black elite. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants.
